Q&A
What is NORWEJ?
NORWEJ is an acronym for
NOrthWEst Jasper Regional District. NORWEJ is a
corporation that was created to provide a municipal water supply for the
residents and business of the Town of DeMotte. NORWEJ is a joint effort of
the DeMotte Chamber of Commerce and the Town of DeMotte.
Why is now the
right time for NORWEJ?
The Indiana Department of
Environmental Management (IDEM) took over responsibility for the quality of
water in Indiana several years ago. They have raised the requirements quite
drastically for the installation of new wells and the testing of existing
wells, especially for businesses. On April 25, 2008, NORWEJ
received $6,286,00 in low interest loan and $3,616,000 in grant funding.
Who will be
supplied water by NORWEJ?
Businesses and residents in
the project area may decide to tap into the water supplied by NORWEJ. This
is entirely voluntary. There is no mandatory hook-up. However, there will
be many advantages and cost savings associated with the system that will
make it worthwhile. The boundaries of the regional district are the same as
the town limits of the Town of DeMotte.
What will my
costs be?
The
initial tap fee will be waived by providing NORWEJ a signed user agreement
prior to June 30, 2008. After that date, the tap fee will be $1,600
for residential use.
The
property owner will be responsible for the cost a water meter $400 and
responsible for the cost of bringing the water line from the water main into
the residence/business.
There
are grants and loans available to those that qualify to help cover the costs
of connecting to the water system. Further information on rural
programs is available at a local USDA Rural Development office or by
visiting their web site at
www.rurdev.usda.gov/in/
.
The
monthly fee is projected to be in the range of $47 - $49 based on the number
of users that have signed the user agreements.
Can I keep my
well for outside uses?
Yes! You may keep your well for watering
the lawn, washing your cars and other outside uses. The well will simply
need to be separate from your house water line. This will ensure that the
public water supply will not be contaminated.
